Please apply using the relevant application linked at the bottom of this page. Please contact us at ediplus@durham.ac.uk if you have any questions or would like to attend the Information Webinar.

The EDI+ Fellowship Programme is open to participants in organisations engaged in research in the energy sector, including Higher and Further Education Institutions, businesses, government organisations, industry and third sector organisations.

The EDI+ Fellowship is a two-year programme with a cohort of up to 15 Fellows per year. Cohort 1 is open for applications now, with the programme running from October 2023 to September 2025.

A summary of the Cohort 1 (2023 – 2025) programme is below. If you have any questions about the programme, please email ediplus@durham.ac.uk.

Participation in the EDI+ Fellowship Programme means designing, implementing and reviewing an intervention to improve equality, diversity and inclusion in your organisation. We will ensure that you have the relevant training and supervisory support to complete this process over two years. Your participation entails a commitment of 0.2FTE (equivalent of 1 day per week of a full-time role), funded either by the network (if you work in an educational institution) or by your employer. This includes an average of one day per month of structured sessions provided by the EDI+ Fellowship Programme, with the other three days a month ring-fenced for you to work on your learning, development and your own EDI-related project. This research project will be supported by staff of the EDI+ network (relevant University staff). Your completed research project report will be placed in an open-access online library to add to the body of work on EDI and to aid other researchers in the future. You will also be guided towards the publication of your research findings in a relevant peer-reviewed journal.

The structured sessions include:

  • Training sessions
  • Professional Learning Network
  • Reciprocal Mentoring.

The training sessions involve:

  • Regular training sessions, seminars and events.  This includes one 2-day in-person session every six months, with the rest taking place online.
  • Four principles – Appropriate, Accessible, Active and Supportive.
  • Four themes – Leading Change, Research informed project design, EDI issues and Communication.
  • Contributions to the training programme will come from a wide variety of experts.

The Professional Learning Network:

A network of fellows, mentors, and wider industry and academic professionals that will be available as a sounding board, for advice and support.

  • Supports meaningful interaction of Fellows and Mentors, linking the various programmes of activity.
  • Enables sharing and development of ideas and understanding through synchronous and asynchronous dialogue.
  • Facilitates the growth and sharing of the EDI resource base in support of Fellows’ projects and interventions.
  • Is a trusted space – where Fellows and the project team may explore perspectives upon how proposals for change may be translated between various contexts or situations.
  • Enables Fellows to explore concepts of professional identity and personal identity through reflective activity.

Reciprocal Mentoring:

Reciprocal mentoring pairs Fellows and senior leaders from different organisations who can meet and discuss their EDI concerns, research projects or anything else they need as part of a two-way conversation. A senior leader from each Fellow’s organisation is asked to commit to participating in the Reciprocal mentoring programme. Further information about the input required is here.

  • Facilitates open, meaningful and respectful discussions across levels, within and across institutions, where communication does not often take place.
  • Allows people to raise issues they face in driving change in a safe and confidential setting.
  • Enables fellows to gain insight into the challenges faced by senior leaders in driving change.
  • Enables senior leaders to gain insight into the challenges faced by fellows in driving change and their everyday experiences.
  • Provides a mentoring relationship for the fellows, in addition to the support of their home institution senior leadership member, that we hope will outlast the programme.
